Boat Naming

Greetings all... (Happy New Year too)

I was at a marina the other day, and saw a wonderful name
on a little boat that was attached to the back end of a
big boat. The little boat was named "Paid IV". But the name
on the bigger boat was "Not Paid IV".

What is a good way to put a new name on an old boat?

I have gone to Google, but have not found a good way,
only people talking about "the ritual". What is this
ritual?

Can someone please suggest good links to information?

Thank you much!

Go to Google Groups and use the advanced search.

Search for:
all the words: changing name
return only messages from: rec.boats.*
return only messages where author is: paul kamen

You will get 6 threads (5 applicable) dating back to
1993 where this subject is discussed.

Paul (call me fishmeal) Kamen provides and describes the
proper ritual in detail.

I once saw a boat named "Kumquat May" with dinghy called "Kumquat
Mite".

My favourite telling name is "Yes Dear." There is a story behind that
one.

The two most important words!

I still think the boat should name herself, though. HER name shouldn't
be what you're going through, it should describe HER. Pat and I
discussed "Blissfull Lee"'s possible new name one day while we scrubbed,
as we didn't feel that the existing name described her properly. That
night as we slept onboard, we both dreamed about Xanadu. That decided
it, other than my fracturing French to tell others she was for two.

For a decade, Xan-a-Deux has been our private pleasure dome with rare
incursions of our best friends.

Since we recognised our owner's wishes, she hasn't let us down. As
operated by the previous owners, she was marginally sufficient.
