Farymann A30?

Hi,

Well, the Broker hasn't phoned yet, but I'm still confident the seller
will accept my offer and I'll be the Proud Owner of a 1978 Cal27. :)

One question: it has a "recently overhauled" Farymann A30 12hp one-cyl
diesel. Where can I find info on this engine, particularly specs like
WOT RPM, etc.? My impression is that the Farymann's are old clunkers,
not pretty or quiet but reliable - correct?

That is my understanding also. Like the old Universals, or Buda Diesels.

I had one in a San Juan 26 that we owned for 10 years. Seawater
cooling, so it went through a couple of exhaust elbows during that time.
Very dependable engine though, not quiet at all, and lots of
vibration, but was hand-crankable (BTDT). WOT was IIRC 2800 RPM.
Running at 2400RPM, we used about 1/3 gal/hr fuel. When the Americas Cup
was in San Diego, we motored around all day on a couple gallons of fuel.
They're a bugger to get parts for locally - in Ca. (and expensive too).

One lungers are a beast when it comes to sound and vibration.

You have the same problem with a Yanmar YSM12.

Only solution I found was to add an AquaDrive which puts the engine on
soft mounts where the resonant frequency is well below the operating
frequency.

I dropped almost 30dB sound level and quit backing screws out of
bulkheads, snapping engine mount studs, etc.

I put Farymann A30 into Google and got 1130 hits.....and no I'm not going
to read them for you...(c;

There's lots of info on the net if you do your own searching....lots of

Yup, did that. I didn't follow all 1000+ links, but the 50 or so I DID
follow were either requests for info (mainly on what to replace the A30
with), or for-sale, either boat or engine.

NONE had the specs I'm looking for - if I'd found what I was looking for,
I wouldn't have asked here ;) I was hoping someone actually HAD that
engine, and could tell me the specs from their Owner's Manual...

Kieth: thanks for that info! Was that Mfr's recommended WOT, or the WOT
you were getting? Did you have a manual?

IIRC, it was governed at 2800RPM, and I don't think mine actually went
over about 2700. I did have manuals, owners and maintenance. Covered
A27, and A30 (couple different configurations as I recall). Manuals
went with the boat, and that was 5 or 6 years ago.

There's a parts dealer in San Diego:

You can probably order manuals from them, if you want, but they'll
likely be pretty steep.

I have one of the smaller ones in my generator.

I believe that BUKH are now the agents, try their website.
