Record Fuel Oil Prices - Waste Marine!

While looking for Christmas gifts, today, I saw a jug of Weems & Plath
"liquid paraffin" lamp oil for the fakey Chinese lamps they sell at
amazing profits. It had been marked down from $129.95 to $108.95,
just in time for Christmas!

I started looking around the display, as if looking for something, and
when one of the nasty salesailors came over to enquire what I was
looking for I said, "Where's the drum?" That threw him, "What do you
mean, drum?" "For over $100 for some fuel oil doesn't it come in a
55-gallon drum?", I asked, innocently.

You just KNOW there's some idiots handing over $109 for a quart of
GENUINE Weems & Plath fuel oil to go in their cheap Chinese lamps,
don'tcha? I used to think the reason people with money had money was
because they were really smart. Waste Marine sure blew that theory
all to hell. They got a 10' plastic dingy out front for $1000!
"Wanna buy some oars to go with that, sir?"

(Aflack duck goes running out of store like he does Yogi Berra's
barber shop, violently shaking his head and making funny noises.)

Larry,

That can't be right. Lamp oil at our WM locally is $10.99 retail.
A 2.5 Gallon jug is 32.99. Alot less via Port Supply. And if course
quite a bit less via other outlets. It must have been a marked
incorrectly. The price seems about right for the lamps themselves
though.

Not only was that marked on the original sales tag, but it was also
marked on the red sale tag. None of them seemed to notice (or care,
of course). It was a pre-printed Waste Marine tag, right off the

It had to be a mistake. I'll pop into my loac WM and check it out.
If it was a computer generated tag I'd bet that the entire chain is

I can't imagine what could in the stuff WM sells that would make it
worth that much...'cuz a quart of lamp oil at my friendly neighborhood

It's just plain old liquid parafin. Everything from Weems & Plath is
expensive. They sell 2.5 gallon containers for $32 which it still
higher than you can get it elsewhere but more reasonable.

reading a boat magazine is like reading a sales brochure, totally

Funny you should ask. Cruising World's bulletin board has always been somewhat "energetic" (as another has recently described it). There are certainly a lot of opinions there. All of them except mine are wrong, of course '-}

Unfortunately, a couple of days ago they changed their BB software and what for years has been a great forum became pretty unusable. They are working on it and acting on suggestions, but I dunno if it will ever again be the board that it was.

Fortunately, SailboatOwners.com stepped in and created a new board using the same software that CW abandonded and most if not all of the denizens have moved over there. http://www.cs-bb.com/forums/CWBB/index.cgi

At the moment, there's still a lot of traffic bemoaning the change at CW and thanking SailboatOwners.com for setting up of the new board, but the sailing related traffic is picking back up. For instance Bob Perry (the guy who designed my boat, Tayana 37 among many others) recently started a thread that has some good information on it regarding gimbaled vs. non-gimbaled / mast vs. tower radar mounts

Oh, come now. When was the last time you saw a posting ON A COMPANY
MODERATED CHATROOM or in an advertiser-supported boat magazine that
said the company's or advertiser's products really sucked. Hell,
reading a boat magazine is like reading a sales brochure, totally
designed to unload products, which is why the company sponsors the
chatroom IT CONTROLS.
