Oil test for motor wear?

I am told that it is possible to send a sample of engine oil and
transmission fluids to a company which will anlayze the fluids for
abnormal wear (metal in the oil, etc.).

Is such a test worth doing before closing a purchase? If so, how do I
contact a company. Thank you.

I was just at tacoma diesel (In fife, wa)
They had test kits for oil, fuel & collant that you put a sample in and sent
off.

I didn't ask if they were worthwhile -- you might call and ask them.

They're listed in the phone book & I'm sure a google search will find them.

Oil test for motor wear?

It's difficult to determine anything meaningful without a 'base-line'
record.. In otherwords spectrographic analaysis is done over an extended
period of time and the results of a current sample is compared to previous
readings. From all samples a trend can be determined and overhauls
scheduled.

Oil samples after a engine failure or from and engine that is about to fail
would however show high metal content, but then it is too late to take
corrective action.

Outfits with large investments in engines usually use some form of this
service as part of their preventive maintenance program..

If the seller changes the oil before listing the boat (which most would do)
all your going to be testing is clean oil.
