FORT MYERS BEACH: A woman walking her dog found the head of Roy Brown,
who was decapitated while riding a personal watercraft Sunday evening.
His body was found by an off duty Lee County deputy a short time
later.

The woman discovered his head in the mangroves south of the Matanzas
Pass Bridge

Investigators are pointing the finger at a line connected to an
abandoned sailboat as the cause. The find may put some closure on
Brown's death investigation.

The line extending from the sailboat had blood on it that was
positively identified as Brown's.

Officials with Florida Fish and Wildlife say it helps put an end to a
rare kind of investigation.

"He actually went right through the line," said Joanne Adams of FWC.
"We do have people hit bridges and low clearances, but this is a quite
unusual event."

The death investigation is almost complete, but the coroner still has
to do some further analysis on the body.

The picture in the newspaper was right, the story wrong. The jet
skiier apparently tried to pass between a sail boat and the mooring
ball, obviously at high speed. Don't know what he could have been
thinking, if at all. Guess he just lost his head for a moment. All
of this in an idle speed, no wake zone of course.

Abandoned boats are a sore subject at Ft Myers Beach and make good
newspaper copy.

You are assuming the species can think?

He was a part time bar tender, probably spent some time thinking about
a few things. :-)

It is outrageous that the media would lie to make a political statement over
something like this.

It's fashionable to call it "spin" these days.

No, its called "circulation". Ever hear the expression that "If it bleeds
it
leads"?

CWM

Ya gotta admit, this story made a great head line.

What happens to them? Are there opportunities for 'poor' sailors to
acquire them at a good price... though I expect if they're abandoned, by
the time authorities get around to dealing with them, they're not in
very good shape, and that good price would have to be, probably, very
good.

Bear in mind that there are many boats that are worth FAR LESS than
nothing, and so would be a very bad deal even if the owner gave the boat
to the "poor" sailor for free.
