If you clean them and grease them with TefGel they work marvelously -
that stuff sticks tenaciously and has incredible lubricity. Another side
effect is that marine growth in the valve is kept at bay so they stay
clean longer.

Which one? White lithium? Is there a special boat grease?

3.95

Any boat trailor bearing grease will work fine. Why pay the boat store
40.00 to re-package it?

If you're still using seacocks then you need to upgrade to something
that works and is maintenance free.

1) haul your boat
2) remove the seacocks and toss them into the scrap bronze bucket
3) remove the through hulls and toss them into the scrap bucket as well
4) install quality bronze (made in USA) through hulls (threaded to the
end)
5) install 90 degree street ells. (made in USA)
7) install quality stainless steel ball valves. (made in USA)
8) use plenty of Teflon tape on the threads.

That's how people who own Bristol yachts do it, at any rate. Is it true
MacGregor still uses Chinese gate valves and plastic thru-hulls?

Just about any will do.

I'd "lap" them with a fine grit if I hadn't done it recently. They'll
work more smoothly afterwards.

Seacock.......... Lots of things go by this name. There are the "old" style:
solid bronze, pet cock style if ya ever had a chemistry class. The
"new generation" are bronze housing with a ss ball and Teflon socket.
Now get this. Took my boat to a local yard in Portland, OR. They did
me a couple free favors so I bought a 1 1/2" seacock for the head
discharge from them. It was the new style Groco ss ball and Teflon
socket style. I asked them to go ahead and thread it on cause I was
leaving for a week. I asked how they were going to put it on: 3M 5200
the guy said with a smile. I declined and said no 5200 and asked how
they ever got them off again. Answer: we just heat them up with a
torch............. I declined again. I called Groco and asked the tech guy
about heating their ball sea cocks. Groco answer, "why would you do
that?!?!?!?" After a few words explaining about the 5200, Groco said
forget it. Might over heat the gaskets. And added the OLD style solid
bronze pet cock would probable handle that kind of abuse but no way on
the new style.

Groco also said this was probably another example of how products
change BUT peoples habits don't. As a result, tradition can be a real
problem when used with new material and products. Personally, I like
the new style pet cock. Starts getting hard...... junk it and get a new
one. End of story. And this is coming from a guy who used "lapping
compound" to seat pet cock valves. Pain in the ass if ya ask me.

So I did a test. One has Teflon tape, one has Dolphinite, another has
Permitex soft gasket seal. Three years later and all are dry. Ask me
in seven more when I swap them all for new. Ten years is good enough
service life for me.

Crisco?!! I bet you use duct tape for band aids and olive oil as a
recreational aid.

ya want to lubricate the ball valve you use something thats gonna
handle salt water, critters, and grit and will still work with your
silicon liner .'. you use Crisco. roger that on the olive oil
(fiance likes it and we add a bit of lavender and almond oil ) and
duct tape ( I like a paper towel pad so the blood soaks up).
I use bronze antiseize on stainless nuts and bolts in aluminum so i
don't have to weld, too.
Oh and Crisco is none reactive.

Don't use Lithium... slightly conductive and can set up cathodic
corrosion. Use silicone plumber's grease from any hardware store.

Most of the time, I hear them called "ball cocks", which is sorta
understandable.

Assuming you are talking about old style Bronze seacocks, ones with a
tapered plug in it. ( Not sure the newer ones with the Ball use
grease).

1st, if they are running ruff, clean them well and use a little 'Valve
Lap' compound (auto store) and work them around a few times. This
will even up any worn areas. Skip this step if they already work
well, no hang ups, and do not leak out the sides.

Then I understand the best is any good water-proof grease, someone
said Trailer bearing grease. Key is that it does not wash out, and
that it will not create odd currents being in salt water.
