Honda 4 stoke Engine Problem

I have an older Honda 4 stroke Outboart engine - Long shaft for sailboats.
it is stuck in Reverse and I am trying to remove the lower unit does anyone
know how to release the lower shaft on this unit ? Or where I can get an
inexpensive manual on this motor ?

Most appreciative or any assistance.

Honda - 4 stoke

engine # BF507272

Your Honda dealer should be have a manual. Our old 7.5 required
releasing the set-bolt on the shift shaft "behind" the mount -- there's
a slot that should be pretty obvious. A bit of rubber mallet work on the
lowermost section should split the case. Once the shifter is released,
the rest of the parts will slip out of their mating surfaces (power
shaft and cooling water, as I recall.)

Dennis,

Saving the money on the expensive books is almost foolish. I was was an
OMC mechanic for a few years (years ago), and still went out to find the
books for engines that got added to the house fleet.

You can go to Amazon.com and find a Chilton or Clymer book (the Chilton
got real bad reviews). That is the least I would do.

= Caution =
Honda changed model numbers some years back. When I went looking for
stuff for a BF75(7.5hp ~85') I used to own, the dealer kept finding
things for a late -90's 75(no decimal)hp. If you do not work the
catalog right, using BF7.5 will only get you the newer version
information. (I personally think that this is a big bozo-no-no move on
Honda marine's part.) If you buy the parts book too, then you can be
certaain of the part fo your engine and order it for anywhere.

I actually suggest that you get a hold of a dealer and get all the real
books. The set I finally got for my recent BF9.9 cost me about 90$us.
That is less than two hours of somone else's shoptime and only the price
of the the first tune-up. The pictures are good, too. It turned out to
be cheap when I had a problem one Saturday evening.

= Special Honda Service note = for those familiar with US harware
The ones I have had to mess with so far (little twins) have all had a
shift rod that has to be released at the top. There is no mid-leg door
to open and disconnect it.
*** And *** if you pull the lower unit without disconnecting it, you
will pull the little wedge that shifts the lower unit out of its hole.
If this should happen, be very careful to get the wedge back in so it
pushes on the shifter pin in the forward end of the prop shaft.

Final note to Dennis,
Don't put a good @ddress out on the usenet. The spambots will grab it
and you will never miss the opportunies to buy viagra or grow you ****
to horse size again. My old @ddress was getting 60-80/day before I
killed it.

Matt Colie - Been doing all this stuff way too long.
