The comments in the other threads about the physical demands of
sailing are apt. Other than Larry (who apparently keeps his 250 lb
frame trim by hauling beer and chasing his bikini-clad crew), what do
the rest of you do to prepare yourself physically for sailing?

I have a gym membership... cardio, weights, nothing fancy. That certainly
helps during the off-season. I usually don't have a lot of time for it the
rest of the time and am much more hit and miss with going. I do a lot of
single-handing on my Sabre 30, but it really isn't that much work. When I
have crew along, they're mostly students, so they do the hard stuff. :-)

I'm getting ready to remove assorted tvs, storage cartons etc off my
treadmill and dust off my Bowflex machine to begin training.

Bowflex 3 times a week and I walk 3 miles a day, outside weather
permitting. I do the 3 miles on a treadmill when weather or scheduling
interferes.

I use a rowing machine (Concept 2) in the winter, and row the hard
dink while cruising. We haven't used an outboard in 6 years.

Unfortunately, the rowing machine was used mainly to pile clothes on
for the last few years, but this winter I been pretty good about
rowing a virtual mile or two every day.

Yeah, that's fine if you can sail daily. The rest of us have to walk
treadmills, row machines, or whatever else it takes to build endurance and
upper-body strength. For me, it mostly consists of thinking about doing some
of those things.

The wife rows/swims/bikes and I train marathon/triathlon. We're both
active year-round.

Wow - getting in shape for sailing: what a concept! Apart from racing in
dinghies, my biggest exertion on a sailing trip is getting all my Lady's
"stuff" on board (that, and hauling up the 35-lb CQR and 30ft of chain
from 60ft down...). But seriously: I pretty much just set the sails and go.

HI:

This is what ive been doing since 1995.

4 or 5 days each week:
Walk to track or gym takes 10 minutes.
Warm up... 15+ minutes. streach all sorts of muscles, pull ups, push
ups, sit ups, some yoga kinda stuff
Run for 40 minutes. Works out to be about 4 1/2 miles.
Walk back another 10 minutes.

But boats take another totaly set of muscles. It takes me about three
weeks at sea to really get in the grove if Ive been a land lubber for
a few months. BEst clue that I am out of sea shape is the scab on the
top of my head, brusied shins, cut or smashed fingers.

Im 53. 6'02" 198lbs and could stand to lose another 10 pounds says the
BMI. But i do love food.
Resting heart rate 55 bpm. BP :)

Why do i do this routeen? It makes me feel GREAT! Plus makes just
seems easer with no worries mate.

I'm VERY new to this, a student of becoming a student. :)

Re the weights, a hypothetical question. Let's say I'm singlehanding so I
have to do all the hard stuff myself.

I'm assuming that the main upper body muscles worked are your biceps,
lifting, and triceps, pulling?

What's the kind of weight you'd have to be capable of manhandling?

Though using the term "manhandling" term and so, possibly, using the
"...ing" portion including, too, in "pulling" maybe to denote on-going
physical action (though the poster doesn't actually so say), note the
apparent absence otherwise from this query of any reference to
comparative speed or to time in any other respect.

Maybe not "hypothetically": While singlehanding in stormy weather, how
much pulling and lifting for how long a period is the sailer
conditioned and able to continue to do if, say, sail changing or a
tangled reefing line or maybe torn and flogging and maybe also wet and
so very heavy sail needs attention?
