Anyone familiar with the location of a pencil zinc on a Universal M-18 (14 hp)
diesel engine?

Is the procedure to replace this zinc simply to screw out the old one and screw
in a new one? Would appreciate any advice

I used to own a boat with an M18. It had a pencil zinc located in the heat
exchanger. On my heat exchanger it was screwed in from the bottom, pointing
upward, on the port side of the unit. There was no other zinc so far as I
know.

Replacing it is just a matter of unscrewing the old one and screwing in the
new. Then run the engine and make sure there are no leaks.

If you have waited too long to replace your pencil zinc, it/they may have
corroded down to the point where you may have to drill them and use an
'easy-out' to remove.. Might be simpler, in this case to just purchase the
zinc and plug as a unit. I see them that way at the marine store, zinc
section.

This link has a diagram of the M18 that shows the location of the pencil
zinc.

Thanks for all the suggestions re replacing the pencil zinc in my Universal
M-18.

Next question: what's the proper procedure for cleaning out the heat
exchanger? I see in the engine diagram that there is a "clean out" cover on
the heat exchanger. Once you pull off the cover, how is the heat exhanger
cleaned out?

Thanks again
