I am considering an aluminum boat for the first time
one about 12 yo. Does any one have references to problems and maintenance of
aluminum compared to GRP.

The BIG issue is electrolysis. Those stories of a penny accidentally dropped
in the bilge eating a hole through the hull are for real. My buddy bottom
painted his boat (with a product recommended for aluminum by the marine
supplier). Unfortunately, it was copper based and within one season you
could see daylight through the hull. I'm not kidding.

Modern marine grade aluminum is "zero maintenance", very durable and is the
only hull material that has significant residual value when scrapped. But
watch for electrolysis or it'll be scrapped before you planned it!

I had a French built, welded Al sloop for 6 years. It was a wonderful boat.
You have to watch the electrical system . Ground nothing to the hull. It
will last forever, and keep you safe with minimum maintenance. Most of the
Mega yachts are Al.

Good luck.
