Moving boat from Los Angeles to Florida (Vero Beach)
Hi all,
We are thinking about moving to Florida and one of the problems we have is to figure out how to get our Beneteau 361 there. Should we sail it, use a trucking company? Any information would be great and appreciated! Thanks Wolf |

Semi relaxed, the goal would be to get it to Florida ASAP but without an
crazy schedule and enough time to make adjustments for weather or to take a breather. Wolf "Lefty" wrote in message .. . Either way will cost you, but I'd venture that the photo opportunities are better the long way around. Isn't this a little like "how long is a piece of string"? -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://kerrydeare.tripod.com |

I once asked a neighbor, who owns a local boat repair shop, why he
shipped a boat his father had given him from California to Virginia instead of sailing it around. He said the where and tear bringing it around would have been much more than the $3,000 or so he payed in shipping. Ron |

And that is without figuring in the cost of going through the Panama canal.
These days it is not cheap. Later, Don W. Have to agree on that. I consider more and more to have it moved by truck.
Thanks everybody for your input!!! Wolf "Don W" wrote in message .. . And that is without figuring in the cost of going through the Panama canal. These days it is not cheap. Later, Don W. And the wear and tear on the crew can be even worse than that on the boat.
I wouldn't do it on *any* schedule. Don W wrote: And that is without figuring in the cost of going through the Panama canal. These days it is not cheap. Later, Don W. Sounds like you've made your decision, but let me add my 2 cents. We have friends who went from Marathon Florida to San Francisco, and return. From FL to CA they shipped over land. They came back down the coast of Mexico and through the Panama Canal. They had these factors in their favor: a) They'd owned the boat a long time and had upgraded her considerably including a new engine and sails. They had also done considerable cruising in Marathon before they left and in San Francisco while they lived there. b) They retired in order to take the trip and so were on no schedule. c) Both of the couple were fluent in Spanish - his mom didn't speak any English. d) They were both long term hams. e) Their boat was a CSY 44 WT They started out with the Baha Haha in 2001 and went down to Mexico. They were having so much fun down there that they stayed a year extra. They just got home to Marathon this June (2003) Notes on their trip are at http://www.marill.com/siesta/Southbo...f_contents.htm .. Now this was definitely a 'stop and smell the roses' type cruise - no schedule at all. And they could have done it faster - probably could knock a year or so off without a problem. But it still took almost a year for them to do. grandma Rosalie |

Truck it to Texas then sail across the gulf, spend a few days in Tampa, St
Pete, Then go through the Okeechobee waterway to the east coast. You can skim the Gulf Coast along the"Redneck Riviera" and duck inside to the ICW if things get too bumpy outside. Question - Did it come with SAILS or a TRUCK? Any volunteers to help Wolf sail his nice Beneteau from LA to FL besides ME?! When do we leave, Wolf? I need to pack....(c; Hmm....if we don't hurry, we could spend Christmas in Panama enjoying the warm weather....maybe stop and visit Belize on this side just to make sure hurricane season is REALLY over....hmm.... We should get to Florida by, maybe, March? April? So many islands, so little time! Larry W4CSC 3600 planes with transponders are burning 8-10 million gallons of kerosene per hour over the USA. Another option. Sell your boat there and buy another in Florida. Boats
are generally much (?) cheaper in the southeast. You'd probably come out ahead in the deal or at least even considering the cost of shipping...and *plus* the un-rigging, haulout, re-stepping the mast, bottom paint, storage while looking for a slip, yadda, yadda, yadda. |
