My fiance and I would love to get married on a boat. What can you tell
me about getting married by a captain of a boat?

and wild guess. I think it has to be a ship in international waters on a
legitimate voyage unless the captain is otherwise empowered to perform the
ceremony. There was a reason for this back when voyages could take months
and months.

You might find it cheaper to rent the booze cruiser of your choice and bring
along a minister or justice of the peace.

Most Chandlers sell a placard that reads

"Marriages performed by the captain of this vessel are good for the
duration of the voyage only"

Many licensed masters who work in the tourist trade get ordained as
well (eg. http://www.themonastery.org/?destination=main) to do just

Or get a Notary license. (not sure license is the correct term, but)
Did one of the sunset cruises out of Key West a few years ago and the
captain did just that, so I ask how and it turns out any notary in Fl is
empowered to perform marriages.
Interesting part was that neither bride or groom spoke English.

Since Roger won't do it ;;; I volunteer to marry you..

If you pay for my seasonal mooring ,, I will do the dirty deed ( ooops, I
mean the ceremony ).

Is it ok if I put a birdcage over your head ,,, then your fiance must yell
out "oh, professor ,, my dreamboat" ...

You then say " your dreamboat is sailing " and make a hoot noise.

If you see me laying on the deck doubled over laughing ...

There's no special reason that the ceremonial wedding and the legal
wedding must coincide. In many European countries the legalities take
place at city hall and the church wedding has no legal meaning.

So if you like the idea of being ceremonially married by a ship's
captain, just make a stop at the appropriate legal venue first for a
civil marriage, then run the rest of the show however you want.

Gogarty ,,, that's right ,, around NY there are a bunch of cruise ships that
do Weddings..

I've been on a couple ..

There is the "Britney Spears" , and then I sailed on the "Pamela Anderson".

One very large boat is the "Liz Taylor" ,, a bit old but huge.

Over on the NJ shore there is the Eddie Fisher and the Za Za Gabor. Both
nice ships, although on the old side.

For a real new boat? Try the K-Fed . It is one of the Feder Line's new
ships.

How large a vessel do you want to get married on? Many cruise ships have
chapels and no doubt a minister or two if the captain doesn't qualify. I
suspect a direct question to any of the shipping lines would bring a

But if it';s just a wedding on the water you want, well, booze cruises
everywhere make their money with weddings on board. My niece got married
in a Buddhist ceremony on a booze cruiser on the Potomoc at Alexandria,
Va. A great time was had by all. Around New York there are many such
vessels. Sometimes the wedding is on board, even with multiple clerics
in the case of mixed marriages. Then they sail off down the East River
and around the Statue of Liberty, ironically.

As for the separation of civil and religious weddings, in Europe only
the civil wedding counts. My wife and I have been married three times,
two in Vienna, Austria, one in New York. One civil wedding and two
different religious ones. In the States, all you need is the marriage
license then any qualified person my perform the ceremony. The religious
wedding is also the civil one.

P.S. In the British Isles, the religious wedding also suffices but you
have to sign the civil register after the ceremony.
