A friend has a sailboat in Brooklyn, NY .. Sheepshead Bay.

I want him to sail up to Newport area and me up next summer.

I'm sure some of you experienced sailors have done this trip..

Could you tell me how far it is? How long it takes? What is the preferred
route?

Any info ??

It is about 156 Nm. You must go up through New York Harbor, East River,

Hell Gate out under the Throgsneck Bridge and past City Island. Then it is

straight out Long Island Sound and north at Point Judith, RI to Newport, RI.

If you want to break the trip up then anchor or moor at Port Jefferson, NY

then the West Bay in Fishers Island, NY. Of course, in a sailboat you must

go with the current through the East River and The Race in Long Island

Sound.

By far the most direct approach from Sheepshead Bay is to sail the
south shore to Montauk Point or Block Island. In the summertime it is
usually a nice easy broad reach all the way.
