Can anyone recommend the best (i.e. long lasting) lubricant for use on
steering cables/guide-wheels etc?

In checking on the web, I found this product

DuPont Teflon White Lithium Grease

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...=cr&lpage=none

That would seem to be an easy way to do the job.

Lowe's? LOWE'S??!!

Geez, hope noone on the dock finds out! You'll be snubbed for shopping for
boat stuff at....(gasp)......LOWE'S!......(c;

It's best to unpack it out of the Lowe's bags into one of those chandlery
bags in the trunk, saved specifically to smuggle hardware-store stuff
aboard down the docks. We have our reputation to uphold, you know!

I recently helped close down a boat supply store in Annap. After 38
years of selling and installing control cables they used the above
mentioned lithium grease.

Motorcycle chain lube.

Spray on, penetrates deep, holds on tight forever, heat stabilized,
does not attract too much dirt. If this lub is able to handle 100 mph
it should handle your application

Both white lithium grease and motorcycle chain lube seem to work well.
Another item to consider is the delivery device. You can purchase
these in most motorcycle or bicycle stores, they clamp over the end of
the cable cover and have a spray tube port to introduce the lubricant
and force it down along the cable sheath. Have someone on the far end
to let you know if it starts dripping out.

I think this is Triflow (that I mentioned in another response), if I'm not
mistaken.
