Rigging an Elvstrom Dinghy

Hi,

I wonder can someone help me please?

I have recently bought this elvstrom dinghy and want to get it up and
running. I have tried to rig it but do not know if I am missing ropes,
pulleys etc.
Here are some other pictures of the boat.

Here is a picture of the parts I have and the layout of the boat.

The pieces are labeled
A. Pulleys
B. Elvstrom Rachet Block, not to sure where this goes or what it
attaches to.
C.Main Sheet System, again have tried to attach it to the Bow and the
track but not sure.
D. I presume this is part of the main sheet pulley system.
E. The longest rope, I presumed it was connected to the track holding
the sheet pulley system.
F. I think this is for attaching the trapeze.
G. Elvstrom Self Bailers. I know what these are for.
H. Not sure what these are or what they are for.
I. Main Sheet track.
J. Not to sure what these are called, but I presume they are for rope
but which ones.
K. Cleats, again not too sure which ropes go though here.
L. Cleats, again not too sure which ropes go though here.
M. Bow hooks for the main sheet pulleys.
N. 4 short ropes in total either side of the transom, but to not know
what they are for.

The rigging seems to be different to other dinghy's.

Of course not. There's no real cure for sailboat-itis.

Hoo boy, you have a real 1960s original.

The pieces are labeled
A. Pulleys
B. Elvstrom Rachet Block, not to sure where this goes or what it
attaches to.

Top of the line 40 years, abrely workable by today's
standards. You can use these but I'd recommend replacing
them (and pretty much all hardware) with Harken or Ronstan.
Even 20 year old Harkens will be ntably better than this
stuff, just like this stuff you're looking at is noticably
better than hardware store pulleys for clothesline.

This isn't intended to be insulting. That used to be all we
had. It can still work but it will be difficult &
frustrating and may cost you some capsizes or smacking up
the boat in close quarters when something won't friggin'
cleat or uncleat reliably.

C.Main Sheet System, again have tried to attach it to the Bow and the
track but not sure.
D. I presume this is part of the main sheet pulley system.

Replace the ropes. They are beyond totally dead. Besides, I
think this (C & D) is the boom vang, it looks like a
cascade purchase.

E. The longest rope, I presumed it was connected to the track holding
the sheet pulley system.

Doesn't matter. Throw it out.

F. I think this is for attaching the trapeze.

Yes, you should have two of them. They are put on the eyes
at the bottom of the trap wire, and the harness hooks to
either little or big loop depending on which is better at
the moment.

G. Elvstrom Self Bailers. I know what these are for.
H. Not sure what these are or what they are for.

They look like swivels for attaching the mainsheet blocks to.

I. Main Sheet track.

Very antiquated and probably will not work well enough to be
worth keeping. You will be better off rigging the mainsheet
with a bridle.

J. Not to sure what these are called, but I presume they are for rope
but which ones.

I don't know either. Could be spinnaker sheet fairleads, or
could be for the trap shock cord.

K. Cleats, again not too sure which ropes go though here.

For the mainsheet. Clean & inspect these very carefully, if
the plast teeth are worn they will not hold a rope.
Personally, I would junk them without a second look but them
I am accustomed by long addiction to spending money on boats.

L. Cleats, again not too sure which ropes go though here.

These would be for control lines like cunningham, maybe boom
vang or halyard tension.

M. Bow hooks for the main sheet pulleys.
N. 4 short ropes in total either side of the transom, but to not know
what they are for.

Probably for lifting & carrying the dinghy, or hauling
oneself back aboard after teabagging on the trap. They look
rotten anyway.

The rigging seems to be different to other dinghy's.

It's the way dinghies used to be rigged 40 years ago. Next
you'll be showing us pics of fine Egyptian cotton sails!

The best help I can advise is to hook up with a dinghy racer
in your area and get used to him saying "Good god, haven't
seen one of these in decades" and also get used to him
advising you to buy new gear. You will definitely need some
new stuff, since this is not complete. But much of what you
have should be servicable if a bit clunky.

Hope this has been a little help. It's a cool boat.

I remember sailing one of these in the 60's. What a fun boat. The
photo brought back memories. It's hard to remember specific details.
It would be hard to be very wrong.

I reserve the right to be incorrect:

A Boom vang
B goes on K
C the boom vang, one line leads through block and to "L", both sides
D is a purchase on the jib halyard
F is the hookup for the trapeze
H The Elvstrom ratchet block goes on one of these.
I Bungee cord for trapeze return
K was the main sheet
L Jib Halyard tension and boom vang
M isn't vvisible in the photo, but you probably are refering to the
bales on the boom for the vang and main sheet
I don't see N
The boat I sailed didn't carry a spinnaker.

Let us know how you did when you get it going. Expect a thrilling sail.
The dagger board had a line to hold it down.

I forgot the cunningham. That will be obvious when you get it together.

Txs to both of you.

I was able to rig it correctly, but will do as advised and replace the
ropes and clean the cleats.
