Shakedown Trip Report
Not exactly earth-shaking, but on Saturday, my son who is a 50% partner in an economy sailboat and I drove out an hour to the nearby town lake - Latonka - and put the SouthCoast 23 in the water. We had fitted a superior mast from a Hobie 16 (very impressive design engineering on the project cat we bought for its mast btw) and in a departure from usual practice, rigged side stays from the peak, and from the 2/3rds point "straight-down" - i.e. no cross trees. The police launch soon appeared to herd the fleet back in, with an approaching thunderstorm with high winds. (This is a city lake) After a 2 hour pause, we launched and sailed out on the jib, and after making a few circles in light winds to get the feel of the rigging, we headed back in down the channel to dock upwind. Did I say we haven't got an auxiliary OB yet? It was good! Brian Whatcott Altus OK |
