The old vinyl markings on my (new) old boat are faded and need to come off.

What works well

Hair dryer?

Goof off?

Maybe, a heat gun will do a better job.

Once the vinyl is gone, compound the surface to blend in the faded area.

3M makes a rubber like wheel that you chuck up in your drill and just
"erase" it. Consistency kinda like a pencil eraser.

If you don't want to do that, Easy-Off oven cleaner works well, maybe
with some heat from a blow dryer.

wouldn't have thought of that one.
(din't think of the paint with goof-off either!)

Will give the hot air gun (not a hair dryer) a try and see how that goes.

Then deal with what's left.

Removing Vinyl?
 

There is no easy way to remove factory vinyl after it has "baked in". A
heat gun works best to soften it up but be carful not to uses too much heat.
You will still have to remove the glue after. It is best to use a citrus
based product. This will not damage the gelcoat and of course be easier on
the environment.
