Uniden `Santana' VHF-Marine Question

Anyone familiar with the Uniden Santana VHF Marine radio?

....can anyone point to an owner's manual on-line.

Need info ASAP for a cruise from Virginia to Maine leaving
June 15. This is a back-up unit just purchased in Denver used.

Need a clue to the keys/combinations, etc...

Bill

Uniden Santana VHF Marine radio

On Uniden's webpage, it lists manuals for these products. There isn't
any "Santana", so is one of the model numbers printed on the label of it?
Marine radios are listed by model number, not some cutesy name.

The webpage address with all the model numbers on it is:

http://www.uniden.com/index/manuals_results.cfm?cat=7

Uniden `Santana' VHF-Marine Question

I'm afraid Uniden only went with a `cutesy' name for this model.

`Santana'
FCC ID# AMWUT862

Unfortunately, the FCC id revealed little info.

Perhaps someone knows what the `L' key is below the `PTT' switch?

I would like to know the age of the unit, and some explanation of the
`1/5' key; `int' key; and `mem' keys or combinations.

Best,
Bill

I can help with the *mem* key.
My handheld Standard Horizon HS460S uses the *mem* key to set up which
frequencies I want to 'scan' when I hit my 'scan' key.
I have six set up now, including 16, 12 for harbour traffic, 68 for
local yacht clubs and 3 more to catch various transmissions...such as
the navy.

BTY I have a *lamp* switch directly below my press to talk switch.
Although the internal lamp comes on for a few seconds everytime I press
any key. I can also press the *lamp* switch to see what's written on the
screen and what buttons I'm attempting to press before I press same.

I would expect the "1/5" key to switch the transmitter power between 1
and 5 watts. (it this a hand-held? Most fixed mount radios are 20 -
25 watts.)

The "int" key probably switches the channel selection between US and
International modes - you won't get the "A" channels in "int" mode.

You could write Uniden and ask if a manual is available - there's
probably a customer support email address on their web site.

I own a "Santana".
If this is a handheld VHF as mine, this is a model sold by West Marine 7
to 8 years ago.
Unfortunately, the original battery was very weak and the replacement
was more expansive than a brand new VHF radio. Thus, I don't use it
anymore. I will see when I return to my boat (at the end of this month)
if I can find the manual.

Here in the States, we have these battery places that will refill your
bad rechargeable battery pack:

http://www.batteriesplus.com/

There's a franchise store not too far from me....(c;

You take your dead battery pack to them and they take it apart, if that's
possible, and replace the dead cells with new, much more powerful, cells
for about half the price of an OEM replacement with the same low-powered
cheap NiCds that failed.

I have an old Standard walkie talkie someone gave me I dearly love. Its
battery pack was 500 maH, NiCd with all the memory problems of NiCd packs
of old, probably like yours. Batteries Plus replaced the AA-sized cells
with industrial 2500 maH Nickel-Metal Hydride cells I think will crank a
Hatteras, right in the original battery pack case. They have the spot
welding equipment and resealing equipment necessary to perform these
operations. The rebuilt pack is still the scratched up plastic case it
always was, but fits and operates fine. The only difference is, now,
instead of it running dead in 4 hours, it runs dead in 3 days of
continuous use. You can't buy battery packs for walkies as good as
these.

The rebuild cost me $US42.

It takes the original charger nearly 2 days to recharge them, of
course...(c; It's charging current is made for the old cells, of course.
That's fine as it has plenty of recharge time between weekends...

France must have some kind of similar battery stores for all the
cellphones, walkie talkies and other portable gadgets everyone has. If
not, we can open a Batteries Plus next door to McDonalds!
