Distance finders

I'm terrible at estimating distances when anchoring. How far am I
from the shore, from a boat, from those rocks or that mark?

Recently, I've noticed a number of relatively inexpensive laser
distance finders designed for golfers.

Has anyone tried these while sailing? Anything to report?

If you focus them on a person ashore, I understand you get an accurate
reading, but the person melts.

Dennis.

Why not enter the rock, shore, boat or mark (ok the boat could be tricky but
delete as appropriate) as a waypoint into a GPS

Have you thought about RADAR?

Laser Rangefinder, Sold in sporting goods stores, work best at less than
600'. Golfers use them, about $175. I keep one in my car for use at work
mapping utility pole locations, then take it with me cruising. Yes, the
illusion of distance from shore, worrying about being too close, only to
find it is a long dingy ride. Also good to measure if another boat is
really dragging closer to you.
