First time Reinstalling out drive, need help...
 
I have a 94' mercruise v8 5.7 liter w/ alpha i gen2 drive. I had to remove
it to fix a leak in the gear lube. Upon attempting to reinstall the drive I
am having problems getting it all the way in. I can get it as far as the
beginnings of the bolts but then it doesn't go any further.. I have the
assistance of 2 other people lifting and guiding.. the shift shafts are
aligned, but it doesn't seem to get to the point where the would go
together. The drive is engaged in the FORWARD position....

I know there has to be a trick of the trade to do this... any help is
greatly appreciated..

My opinion ... get yourself the manual that applies to your year/model.
I picked up the 1964-1991 Mercruiser Stern Drives SELOC manual (not
exactly a shop manual) at the local chandelry. What's good about it is
it not only includes preventinve maintenance, repair, and how
everything works, but also includes all the cautions, always do this
when you change that sorts of guidance.

isnt right and i can't figure it out, was just wondering if there's a little
trick to it...

Understood ... and best of luck with that.

OT: That's the one task I leave to my trusty mechanic. Had the 3-yr
outdrive preventive maintenance done (the schedule I arrive at looking
at my usage) last summer. What he found that I would not have, is that
the o-ring up top had deteriorated letting water into the outdrive.
Luckily, no damage done.

Yes there is. Did you notice those little rubber
o-rings on the end and halfway down your drive
shaft? Make sure that they are well lubricated
with the proper lubricant, and make sure that the
splines are well lubricated. Also make sure that
the large (3-4") rubber seal gasket that goes
around the round part of the drive is not catching
as you shove the drive in, and lube it if necessary.

As you are lifting and pushing the outdrive into
place, make sure you align the splines by hand as
well as you can. Then grab the prop shaft and
gently turn the drive back and forth to get the
splines to line up while you are sliding it in.
It is a tight fit.

When it is almost together is when the sharp edge
of the round section of the outdrive will start to
contact that large rubber seal I mentioned
earlier. You've got to get that to align before
you can slide it the rest of the way together.
