Cruising to Europe with a Pet

We plan to leave next year for Bermuda, Azores, South Coast of Ireland
and on to the UK. We have a small dog that cruises with us. Has
anyone had any experience with bringing a dog into Europe this way?
What US Preps should we take? I can guess at the documents we would
need, but if anyone has a list, that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Norm

The UK has some pretty draconian quarantine rules for dogs.
Essentially the dog must be quarantined for about 3 months. All this
is due to an inordinate fear of rabies. There may have recently been
some relaxation of these requirements.. Best is to check with a
British consular office for the changes and current requirements. Most
British commonwealth and former colonies (Caribbean) still require the
full draconian isolation/quarantine.

Most other countries (also check with each consular office) typicallly
require an import process .... requirement of prior rabies vaccine
within a specified time, certification of health, certain other
vaccines, etc.

You won't have much of a problem on the Continent. We took our dog to
Austria several times (going up the Danube are you?) But forget about
the British Isles. Quarantine is six months. There has been talk of
easing the restrictions but not much has come of it. Major problem is a
vested industry in kennels that hold the animals for the quarantine
period at considerable cost to you and profit to them.

Like I previously stated .... The UK requires draconian quarantine.
Pets that arrive on private boats and planes are subject to this
horrendous quarantine ... and are excluded from the PETS (Pets Travel
Scheme) protocols.

Thanks to all of you for the replies. I guess we will have to leave
her home until we get across and have a family member bring her in by
plane using the PETS scheme.
