Our boat has a Nicro solar-powered vent (no battery) that appears to be
about 4" across, with a large stainless steel "skirt" around it. How
can I take it out to clean/repair it? I have removed the steel part
and tried twisting and pulling at the unit with no luck.

Are you sure it has no battery? The little solar panel charges the
battery which is what actually runs the fan. There should be screws
holding the thing in place. Possibly a previous owner bedded it with
5200? The stainless steel part is 100% cosmetic.

Our boat has one with a battery, and one without. Once I remove the
stainless steel part, there is no sign of any additional screws or
fasteners from the top side. Inside the boat, there is just a teak
trim ring. I think that the previous owners deliberately chose a model
without a battery for the v-berth cabin, and since it only runs on
solar power it doesn't make any noise at night when we are sleeping in
there.
