Why would someone blindly navigate by GPS in a marked channel and run on
the rocks. If you look at Chart 11468 there are R10 and G11 clearly
marking the channel just east of the point where he crashed into the jetty.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four men whose boat
crashed into the jetty at Government Cut Thursday evening.

Shawn Hamby, of the U.S. Coast Guard, said the 23-foot vessel apparently
went airborne and landed on the rocks. The Coast Guard responded within
six minutes of the crash.

"The vessel was up on the rocks and was tilted (vertically)," Hamby said.

The Coast Guard said the captain of the boat misread his GPS
navigational device and crashed into the north side of the jetty while
trying to enter Government Cut.

"I can't honestly say (how fast they were going). They were going fast
enough to get up on the rocks. That's all I can say," Hamby said.

One of the two boaters who were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital had
facial injuries.

"He had an eye injury, and it really just wasn't good," Hamby said.

The two men who were taken to the hospital were in stable condition
Thursday evening.

Miami-Dade County police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission were investigating how the crash occurred.

Coast Guard officials said the men did not appear to be intoxicated, NBC
6's Tom Llamas reported.

This I don't understand. Don't people look outside when driving their boat?
I'd have thought in that area one would be keeping a sharp eye if for no
other reason that to avoid others navigating at high speed, also not looking
outside. Even if people believe their GPS, haven't they ever entered a
waypoint wrong?..oops. Got to take sightings, look for channel markets.
Not too tough really. Reminds me of a saying used alot in the upper Keys on
weekends with the folks from Miami come trooping down..."Have Money, Buy
Boat".

I know everyone screws up now and again, me included.

It doesn't sound like the GPS was even slightly at fault in this case.

The kids today have a phrase called "owned". If you screw up a
situation entirely on your own, you are "owned". It may come out of
skateboard culture, where combining physics with cement offers plenty
of these type of opportunities.

Also of late, we have the concept of "The Darwin Awards", the winning
of which involves stupid behaviour that subtracts one from the gene
pool.

I propose, therefore, a new coinage of "Darwowned", which is a shout
one can give when one hears of the foolish meeting the deadly, such as
entering a harbour at speed, at night, via GPS.

I hope the "eye injury" was to the scrotum.

not skateboarding but cracker culture
you're "owned" when someone gets root or administrator-level access to
your computer...usually without your knowledge...and begins to use your
machine for purposes not of your choosing

(and people wonder why smart people don't use Windows computers)
