Transmissions

Thinking of repowering an older 37 foot Trojan Express with new Crusader
8.1 liter high output engines (claim 425 HP at 5000 RPM at prop). There is
a choice between Borg Warner Velvet Drives and Hurth Trannys. Comments
requested. Fred

Transmissions

Fred, I'm not sure of the differance in transmissions, are the Hurth
units non-hydraulic (mechanical)? Some mechanical transmissions have in
the past had problems with spinning at the dock if their's a good
current most of the time. These units can burn out due to lack of
lubrication if their not designed to work with a running current. Also
those engines are probably going to go through a lot of fuel. Have you
given much thought to diesels? They are more expensive, but your not
going to need as big a diesel as you would need a gas engine, the
diesel will burn a lot less fuel and the boat will retain much more
value with diesels in it. It's worth looking into if you haven't done
so already
