anyone using or have knowledge of an Espar hot-water heater [diesel]?

For a boat, what are the negatives of this heater ?

How is suitable sizing attained ?

Thank you,
Courtney

Hi again, Courtney,

Sorry I missed this message a couple of days ago, but fwiw, here's my take.

I pulled an Espar CABIN heater from our boat because it was finicky,
unreliable, and terribly complicated. For our cruise last spring to Alaska,
we wanted reliable heart in the boat, so we installed a Webasto heater
instead--and were (and continue to be) delighted with it. Simple, robust,
dependable.

Now you asked about a WATER heater. Personally, I'd stay away from the
Espar simply because of our experience with the cabin heater. Espar
products seem to be hugely overengineered, in my judgment, anyway.

And we also, as it happens, replaced our WATER heater last spring, too. We
bought a Torrid 10 gallon heater that works either on shore power or waste
heat from the boat's main engine; engine coolant is circulated through a
heat exchanger in the water heater. Works great. We were very pleased with
the Torrid heater, too, and would recommend it highly.

We bought our heater from Go2Marine in Seattle, a VERY dependable online
chandlery. Here's the link:

Hope all this helps.

Fair winds and blue skies to you,

Dick B.
