Moho River Belize

We are considering property in Belize. The Moho River area sounds
about right for us. However we can't find any substantive information
on the river itself. For example what is the depth over the bar? We
have a 33-foot cutter with about 5 foot draft. Having heard so much
about the poor condition of Belize charts I don't want to rely on
them.

So....is there anyone out there with any local knowledge of the Moho
River?

And...how about the other rivers in the same general vicinity? Rio
Grande or Monkey for example?

That's a common problem in lots of areas, even right here is south
west Florida. The charts are next to useless in most inshore areas,
and the realtors are not only unreliable but frequently unknowledgable
as well. What we did was scout around and see what types of boats the
locals are using, and try to find a few to talk with that have no
connection with a potential deal (possibly a local club?). If you see
other deep draft sail boats in the area that is a good start, but if
you see nothing but small outboards be wary. Another possibility may
be renting a boat that has a depth sounder and doing your own access
survey. Be prepared to do metric conversions.

We've spent 4+ years in the Belize area. Before you even start worrying
about the controlling depths of the area, I suggest that you understand the
area and the local and country politics . Believe me, there are lots of
problems in Belize. For starters, please my report titled "Economic Crisis
in Belize" at
http://www.geoffschultz.org/2005Sail...e_Economy.html . I
don't know what the situation is like right now, but I doubt that it's
improved a lot. Spend time in the area before you commit to yourself to
owning a house/property.

Geoff,

Tried the link, and got URL not found. Went back to your homepage and tried
to find the report, but didn't. Nice site!

Geoff,

Thanks for the reply. We have sepent some time in Belize, most
recently Glovers (La Mont/Cabrel island -NE caye) and Punta Gorda.
While our knowledge is not complete we do understand the magnitude of
economic uncertinity and the risks. As with buying a boat we would be
looking to invest no more than we would be willing to loose should
things go south. Also, we are looking only at raw land, no houses or
other "improvements" with the idea that,.....someday......maybe.....we
would be in a position to do something with it.

That being said, it sounds like you have kicked around a good bit and
may have some interesting insights into local river navigation. I
appreciated you thougths about crossing the bar coming out of
Guatemala. I would love to hear of other experiences.

Many thanks,

Howard

Oops, sorry! I don't know how that happened as I did a cut/paste. Oh
well, stranger things have happened. I hope that the site sheds some
light.
