There is no law, merely etiquette, protocol and practice. Saw

a photo

recently of a squadron of US Navy vessels, very one of which

was flying

the national ensign from a different point. If they can't get

it right,

what can the rest of us do?


If the naval vessel was under way then the ensign would be flown

from the peak of the gaff on the most aft mast. In port they are

displayed on the stern and the jack flown on the bow.


They were underway. Some had the ensign at the stern, some at the
starboard yard and some at the port yard. Really weird and most
noticeable.

This was my wife and I second voyage on our 1st cruiser, a '96 25 foot
Starcraft mid-cabin overnighter (appropriately named, "She Said Yes."
Destination was Beacon Rock on the Columbia River Gorge from Portland.
Amazing things....not a breath of wind, nobody at the moorage (do people
work on Tuesday?), the Full Moon (accompanied by Mars and Venus), foliage,
and best of all.....no mechanical breakdowns. (On the maiden voyage, we hit
a sinker log and lost a prop.)

Some stunning pix. I liked the mountain shots - they are pretty scarce
hereabouts. (But I have seen the lake boil with fish - and a deer on
a peak against the sky as seen from the lake.)

yep, it sure was green and pretty last time i was up in those
parts......i have been thinkin' of dragging (trailer) my 20 ft
whaler up there around the columbia river mouth for some
"crusin sessions".........it looks like some nice boating
and camping areas.......i have my eye on the rushmore area
as well...we did the black hills, rushmore and devels tower
drive a spell ago...some great lakes and open water areas
that way also...pretty remote though, as compaired to the
coastal areas......how do you like your boat ??

My wife and I are loving the boat. The cabin space is perfectly designed
for us. I'm liking the efficiency and speed of the 5.7 engine. It cruises
28 mph easy at 3200 rpms. GPH is roughly 8 gals/hr. It does need one
add-on.....the canvas is too heavy for the aluminim frame and the speed of
the boat. Hopefully, next week we will have a stainless steel frame put on,
then we're set. We originally thought about plumbing the head for showers
but have nixed that idea for now, given that most of the marinas have clean
showers.

We tried the alcohol stove but couldn't get it to work efficiently. Instead
of messing with it further, we bought a coleman propane stove, which will
use outside under the canvas cover. Same with the propane grill which stows
nicely in the engine bay.

Finally, we were told that the battery may be insufficient for overnight
use. We have two of them....one strictly for starting the engine. So far,
it's held up fine, using lights and run my DVD/laptop player hooked to a 12
volt inverter. We do turn off the frig at night.

We're planning another overnight cruise tomorrow. Can't wait!
