Hello on the high seas ond closer to shore,

We are contemplating cruising as a step up from day and weekend sailing.
Suppose a 36' sailer with 2 or 3 person on board want to sail around and
make portcalls during a certain timeperiod.
I would like to ask the greater boating community to contribut some $$
figures for the various costs involved.
What kind of typical cost are to be anticpated; boatsize related,
legal/immigratiom/customs,harbour and berthing,
food and supplies etc etc.
Please give approx figures and assume condition you be familiar with.
Also any info how different destinations compere in terms of cost.

Do draw up budgets for this nice possibility to spend time is important, so
all replies can and I am shure will be
much appreciated.

It is difficult to give estimates without knowing the area that you
contemplate cruising. East coast, west coast, Bahamas, B.V.I., Leewards,
Windwards? Provide more information if you truly want answer.

I don't have time right this minute to do your budgeting. However if you
can wait just a bit, I'll get right on it this weekend. Do you prefer I put
it in Quicken format, or is MS Money OK?

BTW, do you like rice three times a day, and do you prefer water or Cabernet
Sauvignon?

Excellent the first one; but need to shave of a bit of those figures to
enter the league of cruisers.
I would not expect real neat spreadsheet budgets unless they exist in your
files and you don't mind sharing info.
But if a larger group of posters each brings in a few numbers relating to
whatever time or area they have cruised, that would be really great. Just
mention references as to location ,season,size of crew and boat size;
whatever matters.
And may be these info exist already nicely compiled; will find out together.
The composite of all the info and bit of homework on mine or any reader out
there in cyber land(sea) should be very useful indeed.

The problem with asking this question is that the range varies
dramatically. I know one couple that has cruised for many years and
I'd be surprised if their total expenses are over $20K a year.
They're looking forward to social security because then they'll be in
the lap of luxury.

When we cruised for an extended period we started out frugal and then
decided we had more fun at expensive marinas, and we weren't trying to
make it last forever, so why not enjoy it? This probably added about
$15K per year. But then we saw a lot of people going first class at
ever turn, and they must be spending well over $100K a year. And this
is still talking cruising sailboat for a couple. Powerboats can burn
$500 in fuel in an afternoon.

I was talking recently to someone about the range of costs of redoing
a kitchen, and we came up with a similar range - $15K to $100K, and
far beyond that if you really like to blow money. So maybe that's a
rule of thumb - whatever amount you would consider appropriate to redo
a kitchen is what you would need to cruise on a boat for a year.

My wife and I cruised from San Diego down to Panama and back in about a
year. During that time we met cruisers who were spending thousands of
dollars a month, and more than a few cruisers who were probably
spending no more than a couple hundred dollars a month, or less. When
it comes to cost of living, cruising is just like life on dry land:
different people spend different amounts depending on their means and
their tastes.

Many of the biggest expenses people incur in cruising are not for true
essentials. We had a friend who lost all of their electronics in a
lightning strike. They took a month or so off from cruising, and took
out a second mortgage on their home (about $15,000) to replace a set of
equipment that my wife and I had never owned.
