Best Internet, TV for Boat?

Hi,

What company should I consider for high speed internet, television and
phone? (and what should I expect to pay for hardware and monthly service).
I will mainly be coastal East Coast of USA.

thanks,
Marshall

The boat should be a place to get away from all that stuff. Use a cell
phone and plug into your laptop when you absolutely have to be online.
Skip TV completely!

Why do you think it necessary to impose your opinion on the rest of
us? I like watching TV on the boat and I really like doing wireless
internet on the boat, and I'm old enough not to have to pretend that I
don't like it just because someone like you says I should be getting
away from it.

I'm retired after all. I'm not going out on the boat to relax from
being at work.

I don't particularly like cell phones. If I was going to get away
from something, that would be it.

Some people like string beans, some like beets, others can't stand either.
The bottom line is to do whatever makes *you* happy, and ignore
the comments of eggplant eaters.
Me? No TV....I'll get news from a radio.
If I want to watch a movie, I'll play a DVD on one of those 7" players.
(With a 30 foot boat it's about all that will work space-wise)
Do I need internet in the marina? Still trying to decide....email and weather would be nice.
Is a stereo a "must have" for me? You betcha...:)
Different strokes and all that..:)

I just objected to his 'holier than thou' attitude

Me? No TV....I'll get news from a radio.

I like the radio too - not just FM, but also VHF, which I tend to
leave on all the time on scan.

If I want to watch a movie, I'll play a DVD on one of those 7" players.

I NEVER watch movies. And I don't watch situation comedies or drama
TV shows either. If I did, life would probably be easier. We have to
have two TVs everywhere because I don't want to watch the same things
that he does.

(With a 30 foot boat it's about all that will work space-wise)

No experience with a 30 foot boat. But we have a TV/VCR (dual
voltage) that's not that big. My son had one that we gave him when he
was an long haul trucker for the sleeping cab.

Do I need internet in the marina? Still trying to decide....email and weather would be nice.
Is a stereo a "must have" for me? You betcha...:)

Bob has a stereo - I don't like listening to the same tunes (i.e. the
ones I have bought in CD form) over and over.

Different strokes and all that..:)

Rosalie -

The June issue of Cruising World Magazine has an announcement that
they are currently looking for a woman to be part of the team that
reviews boats. They want to add a woman's perspective to the mix of
opinions. It's about time, huh? Anyway, I immediately thought you
might be exactly who they are looking for.

I think YOU would be better suited, Binary Bill the so-called sailor.
Just drag out your cross-dressing appurtenances . . . Even without
them, you're better looking than Grandma Rosalie.

I certainly have opinions, but they wouldn't be particularly
'typical'. I'd rather have hand holds and storage lockers than wide
open space and 'decor', and my back is too painful for me to stand in
the galley doing any cooking so I couldn't evaluate that.

I've just installed a 20" flat-screen TV and DVD player on my 31ft. sail-boat.
No problem with space, both fit on the bulk-head above the table. I like to be
able to watch a movie on those wet days when I don't feel up to leaving a quiet
location.g As far as the internet goes, I'm just not interested when I'm
sailing which is most of the summer as I'm happily retired now.

I think your input would be a lot more valuable and insightful than what is
typical in these reviews. You are observant, articulate, and you are direct
about what you like and don't like. I really think you would exceed what they
"think" they are after. I truly hope you'll get a copy of the magazine and
contact them.

I have to wonder what earthly good is any woman on a boat if
she isn't healthy enough to cook . . .

Welllll . . . It does depend on the woman. I can't imagine grandma
Rosalie being much good for anything if she couldn't cook but
S.Shortcake, for example, might be put to good use picking strawberries
in the fields up in Florida City. She'd be able to eat her fill. The money she
made could be added to the cruising fund. She can probably even speak
Spanish. Trouble is she may be almost fifty. :-)

She might be able to advise on colours and decor for your tub.
Lets see...canary yellow hull....mauve upholstery...!
