diesel booster

A while back, I asked if anyone knew of a way to temporarily boost the
power output of a small diesel and essentially the answer was negative.
What i wanted was something like NoX used for gas engines. I did talk
to my brother-in law who teaches diesel mechanics and design and he
immediately said "Sure, you use propane injection". It seems that this
is used in heavily modified high power diesels used in diesel dragsters
and diesel monster trucks. He estimated perhaps a 30% increase in
power just by bleeding a small amount of propane from something like a
Coleman cylinder directly into the air intake. Of course, I explained
that propane is heavier than air.......

Do you anticipate the need to get your sailboat on plane once in
awhile for a quick round of water skiing? Or perhaps as recovery from
a "too fast" docking approach?

It wouldn't do you much good unless you had either a variable pitch
prop or one that was mismatched to the engine and thus overloading it
most of the time. In the latter case, you would be steadily wrecking
your engine.

Unless the boat is light enough to keep going faster, putting more
power into the same prop beyond a certain point won't increase
performance. Sailboats don't fall into this category.

Many boats, especially sail boats, have props that are poorly matched
the engine and hull. If you don't think you have the performance that
you should for your horsepower, you might look into this.

Yeah, put some performance injectors on the engine, pipe in some propane
and the magic button for drugs on demand and that baby will really putt.
Going to the windward will be no problem ....

What's a "performance injector?"

an injector that flows more oil.

Oh. That is what all injectors do when the throttle is advanced.

And???????

on of the main invators in this concept is Westport Inovations.

Look up www.westport.com and see what they have.

That is not a function of the Injector, but a function of the Injector
Pump, on a marine diesel engine.

Except on engines which use "unit injectors" ala older Detroit Diesels,
and the rapidly growing number of engines which use a modern version of
the "common rail" system.
