Mast selection

Carbon Rotating mast selection

Hi all,

I am just finishing up building my own 32' trimaran. But once
finished I will need to put it into the water and having a mast that
the sails go on would be great. The boat is similar to a corsair 31r in
many regards. It is actually a bit lighter that they are, even with all
the goodies. My question is what should I be looking for in the mast
section I choose. It will be a rotating mast with single spreaders. I
was thinking about a wing mast 9in x 4in or so. What Ixx and Iyy should
I be looking for?

Thanks for any of your help.

I am considering building the Farrier F32. Is this what you built?
What construction method did you use? How long did it take? Can you
offer any advice?

No, that's not actually what I built but very similiar. Myself and a
friend has designed it. I have built boats using several differant
methods before and think the one that Ian documents, with foam over a
backbone, is a great method for hulls with the type of curvature that
tri's have. He couldn't be a more helpful designer, If I didn't want to
go out and design it myself I would not have considered anything but
one of his designs. As for build time, I had help from friends and
didn't keep track. If you stick to Ian's plans and methods as close as
possible that would actually make a faster build, he really knows what
he is doing. So getting an estimate from him or others that have built
to his plans are the best.

Take care,
Gilbert
