Mercruser Grinding
My mercruser outdrive grinds going into forward and reverse. I have slowed the idle down to required RPMS. Is there an adjustment to stop this?

Yes, the shift bowden cable connects with a lever on the transom which cuts the ignition momentarily when a gear is engaged. You have a symptom of the engine not cutting when needed. Study this linkage, make sure it is free, and adjust it to activate at the appropriate moment. Brian Whatcott Altus OK |

The reason I ask is because Mercury uses cone clutches in their outboards and outdrives, and cone clutches do make a grinding noise when you shift them, it's perfectly normal, and not a sign of anything wrong. It gets a lot worse if you try to put it into gear slowly. Your best bet, just push it into gear, don't go slow. And enjoy the fact that noisy cone clutches will out live the nice and quiet ones by a long shot. |
