Gimbaled Radar Mounts

I am upgrading my radar system to a RayMarine C-80 with a 4 KW radome. I
would like to gimbal it and am looking for feedback on good/bad mounts. I
will be attaching it to a pole on the stern of the boat.

Waltz use to be the more economical version compared to Questus, but I
understand Waltz has gone out of business. Apparently their new Manta RLS
was a design flop. I wouldn't buy that unit if I came across one but the
older RLS with the square box is probably OK.
I've never heard anything bad about the Questus or older Waltz RLS except,
perhaps, for corrosion on outside surfaces.

I've had a Quest on a split backstay for 7 or 8 years. No problems. It's
carrying a 2Kw unit.

I just wish it was about 2' feet higher. But there are pros and cons on
that.
Pro: Sometimes it picks up the boom on the shorter ranges depending on the
position of the boom. Higher would eliminate that. It would also get it
above you when working on the deck. I know 'they' say it won't hurt you as
long as you are 10' or more away, but it still bugs me that I'm being slow
cooked when it's on and I'm on deck. I try to go to standby at those times.

Con:
Harder to install and clean the dome. Right now I can install/remove and
clean it by standing on the coaming and back rails.

Just some thoughts.

I put a 2kw on a pole at the stern using a Questus mount. When I questioned
Raymarine they said that it should at least 10' above the water and that
with the new technology use could use the dome as a "pillow" and it would do
you no harm. My system seems to work great and I'm learning more about it
everytime I go out. I built the pole myself using a variety of components.
It mounts the dome, an antenna array, a stern floodlight and the boom and
tackle for the dinghy engine lift. I can send a picture to anyone
interested.

Yeah, the water laying in the bottom of the dome absorbs the stray
radiation as it eats away at the POT METAL PARTS.....dammit.
