Panama to San Diego

Would like some input from anyone that has sailed the Panama to San
Diego route or the Coastlines along that route. If my time frame gives
me a lot of flexibility, what would be the ideal time frame to make
this trip? Thanks in advance for any insight.

Well you can go read this book online..

Not a desirable trip, it's all up hill.

Those with money pay grunts to sail their boats back north, those without
money ship via truck.

Thanks for the suggestion but we are making the trip on her bottom. I
would really appreciate some input from anyone that has actually made
the trip and can offer preferred time frame. Chuck

I have only done the Mexico part of the trip but I know that the winds in
winter from about December to April are nasty between southern Mexico and Costa
Rica. That part of the trip is best in November or April and May if I remeber
correctly. I think if you started form Panama so you got to Costa Rica in
November and then spent the winter in mainland Mexico moved to Sea of Cortez in
April and in late May or early June went up the coast of Baja you could have a
nice trip. Early May is the worst time to go North along Baja.

Chuck,

You do not seem to have done any research on your own. I can hardly
believe usenet is your primary source of information for ocean
voyaging.

The "Baja Bash" book Jeannette referred you to is a good reference.
Also see "World Cruising Routes" by Jimmy Cornell and "Admiralty Ocean
Passages for the World" while you're waiting for someone that has
actually done this trip to reply.

Tom, What information do you have that lets you state that I have done
no research and am only using usenet as my primary source. We have
sailed and cruised for over 20 years now and use ALL sources
available. That includes this board and anything else available. We
are SSCA members for 15 years and have all their resources available.
We use them all. Nothing is more favorable that those that have been
there and done that. And I am sure there are some that visit this
board. So we will post questions here from time to time to gather
additional information. That does not mean we do not also look
elsewhere. Thanks for your input. Chuck

I did not state any such thing. I said you do not *seem* to have done
any research on your own. I got that impression from your original
post because it lacked any comment about what resources you had
already availed yourself of, gave no clue you were aware of a
hurricane season, and did not acknowledge Jeannette's post about the
Baja Bash which is a good reference even though it covers only part of
the route and is confined to near shore.

It seems you have a lot more experience than I have or (unfortunately)
will ever get. I apologize for seeming to have jumped on you. I
tried to be polite to someone that appeared to me to have little
experience but was willing to jump off the deep end.

I wish you fair winds and following seas.

Thanks to Jeannette and Dick. My problem all along has been that there
is much info on the trip up Baja, bit little on the rest of the trip.
But each piece of information adds to the puzzle. Haven't been able to
respond as soon as I like since we have been busy prepping the boat
for hurricanes, evacuating then un-evacuating. Any additional info
will be appreciated. Chuck

There's a book by John Rains called "Cruising Ports: Florida to
California via Panama" that you might want to look for.

Thanks Cindy, Just picked up a copy. Info is pretty dated but still helps.

I did Panama to Acapulco in late April/early May 1996. Winds are
generally light, and we didn't get any tehunapeckers, so all in all
a pretty easy trip. I will say it seemed brutally hot after coming
from 50 degree rainy PNW and hitting 90F/70% humidity in
Panama. Pretty weird to see the locals put sweaters on when it gets
down into say the mid-80s at night. I do think that's the hottest
part of the year there though.
We only made one stop, at Cocos Island which isn't too far from
the rhumbline. Pretty cool place to visit, I recommend it highly.
They get about 23 feet of rain a year, rumors of buried treasure
and it's a Costa Rican national park and not developed.
Offshore the breeze was inconsistent and we motor sailed a lot.
No fun in the heat and humidity. There was an amazing amount of
wildlife offshore - turtles, porpoises, and I saw what I'm pretty sure
was a sperm whale breech only a couple hundred yards from the boat.

Let me know if you have questions - I know you're looking for a coastal
trip and I can' thelp you much there. Latitude 38 does occasionally have
articles by people who are down that way.
