US Yacht 25ft - Rudder Post Maintenance
I just dropped the rudder on my 1981 US Yacht US 25 by removing the
bolt in the post column under the stern (behind the inboard/outboard engine). From the bottom of the stern, the post appears to go up through a sleave, through a collar that turns with the post where the bolt was, then continues up to the cockpit where the tiller head attaches. There was some heavy gray grease and two thick threads (packing cord??) that remained on the post when it was dropped out from the stern. There was a 1/2 inch oozing ring of this grease just above the grease fitting completely around the fiberglass sleave that the rudder post turns in, between the fixed lower sleave and the rotating collar. Does anyone know the correct procedure for reinstalling, sealing and re-lubricating the rudder post? |
