Duramax conversion possible/desirable?

I have an old Bertram that has a pair of 454's which I will either
convert to diesel or probably scrap. The local Junkyard says that I
ought to look into converting the GM Isuzu Duramax because they are
relatively cheap, as there is little used demand for them. However,
the Duramax is an electronic engine. Is this a bad thing in terms of
waterproofing and mounting the boxes, or is this actually a pretty
good idea?

I already sold the 454's to local street rod guys and I put the
marine manifolds and hardware on EBay, so there's no going back.

Relatively cheap would not the proper description..... You should look at
getting a set of 6.5's.... I have posted a link for Peninsular Diesel I
don't know about their prices but....

good luck,

Kevin,

The worst part for you is going to be finding exhaust manifolds for
those engines, but someone might know of a match. Then you need a heat
exchanger, those engines have aluminim heads, and aluminum heads do
not like to get too hot, get the right size heat exchanger for your
engines. As far as the electronics, just make sure their in a dry
location, it shouldn't be a problem.

When I first saw these engines I thought they would probably make a
nice boat engine, and they probably will. The electronic controls
should keep the fuel burn down, but your definately going this one
alone, I haven't seen these engines marinized yet.

Good luck!

I found this link, you need to sign up, but it may be worth it.
