Haul, Scrape, Clean, Paint with anti-foul (the best at $150+/gal)

Bottom line: $900 for a 25 ft Hunter.

Ouch!
The folks there said that in the hyper-saline water
at Corpus Christi, the very best stuff they applied might last two
years - even three - but likely not!

150 bucks a gallon is hardly the best. Try $250 a gallon for Petit Trinidad
SR which is the best you can get for tropical waters.

I guess I should give Wilbur's view some consideration, since he is
given some weight by an active current off shore cruiser (Skip).

Don't know what goes into this Petit Trinidad - supposing it is one that
is prohibited in the US, it might be a tributyl tin type, or if its just
toxic but not prohibited, perhaps a high copper ablative?

People are trying to get past the copper toxicity found in popular
sailing waters - San Diego Bay for instance - so there's effort to
promote the non-metal coatings. Hard epoxy can last longer than the
metal ablatives, I suppose. I notice a UCalDavis survey comments that
some silicone self-polishing coatings are promising.
A marine coating conference last year had an encouraging comparison
between copper loaded, and biocide loaded proprietary types in favor of
the non metal.

It's paradoxical I know: the idea of anti fouling is to deter marine
organisms - and that's almost a definition of toxicity.
Oh well....

Yes, and the jury is still out on anything not containing copper or
tin. They both work pretty well. Tin is still available if you know
where to look.

FWIW,

The commercial fishermen in the PNW use mostly ABC3. Many cruising
sailboats in the south are now going to the same product. $100 per
gallon and simply outlasts all the others!

Devoe's Ablative Copper ABC#3 looked good in the Army tests for Mussels.
That's not the beginning and end of hull pests, for sure, but its
encouraging, and priced competitively.

Warm salt water is the favorite hang out for barnacles. Anyone that has
spent a couple days scraping barnacles will laugh at zebra mussels.

Should have added that Texas and Florida barnacles can kick the crap out of
anything growing up North so stuff that works great up there may not do
squat here in the South.
Bottom paint manufacturers identify which conditions each formula is for.

"Here in the South" you need to charge the hull with 220VAC to slow them
down. On an unrelated matter, be very careful when you empty out the
prehistoric monsters your salt water cooling pump sucked into the intake
strainer on your marine A/C unit. The same monsters present in the
prehistoric sea, kinda looking like a centipede with a million legs, that
killed the dinosaurs who got too close to the sea, are under the docks at
any Charleston marina. They'll fill an A/C strainer in a week.

.....AND THEY BITE LIKE HELL WITH POISONED FANGS!

The ones already in the strainer are really ****ed off by the time you open
it....in full attack mode! Don't dump 'em out on the dock where someone in
bare feet may get near them!
