New release of OpenCPN free charting software is available

If any of you are looking for good, free charting software, the
developers of OpenCPN have just announced the availability of
release1.3.4, available he

http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencpn/

I have already installed in on two of my PCs, one XP and one Vista,
both are working well. The new release adds a very nice track
logging feature with import and export of logs, and fully adjustable
logging intervals by either time or distance. It is a quick
download and easy install.

Charts can be downloaded freely from NOAA -- see

Are international charts available for this program? If so, in what
form are they?

Cheers,

There are some international charts available but I'm not sure about
Asia.

Open CPN will work with any chart in BSB raster format (looks like a
normal paper chart), or in the S57 Vector format which looks more like
a typical GPS/chart plotter display.

Be warned that many international charts are based on very old surveys
that aren't terribly accurate.

Gee, you mean that my copy of the chart marked "Based on survey by HMS
Beagle, 1793" might be out of date?
