Kink in the forestay

What is the right procedure when you find a kink in a two years old 5/16” OD
forestay? Would you replace the forestay or challenge it?

Well, it's compromised. How did it get that way? Something must have caused
it. I'd replace it.

I'll add to my comment by saying that it also depends on the sailing
conditions. If all you have is light air, then you could probably defer the
replacement.

Depends on what kind of sailing you do.

Ask any rigging guy and they would say replace it. Its cheep in boat
bucks and one less thing that will take your mind off your operator
responsibilities.

Or....................... probably only reduced strength by 50%-70%.
Make your own calculatoins and sail accordingly. I would think the
deck fastener would fail/rip out before the stay would part.

Replace it - without even asking anyone...

Replace it is my vote - a kink is weakening - and 5/16 in wire is for a
big 45 ft + mast I take it.

A "kink", how? How did you never notice it before, or is it new?
Still, I'd replace it. If it is really close to either end, you might
consider cutting it out and putting in a short piece using sta-lok
terminals but replacement is prob easier.

Thanks to every one.
I'll place an order for a replacement.
The bulk of the work is to remove the furler and re-installing it.
I'll bring the old forestay to the rigging shop, this way I will be sure
that the dimension
from hole to hole is the same.

How did it get kinked? It took place while removing the mast for winter
storage
I like the idea, I'll replace it with a new forestay.
As for the old one the kink is locate at the upper end right below the eye.
I will doctored it as you have said and kept it for a spare.

A kink is a well known form of abuse, and extracts a known percentage
of the strength. If the stay was considerably oversize, maybe you can
keep it. A matter for calculation.

Remember, a Daisy Chain is only as strong as it's weakest Kink.
