I am considering a Hanse 40 for summer cruising in the Mediterranean.
I need something that is easy to sail with one or two people,
confortable enough for crusing weeks on end and easy to maintain
during the off months. How is the quality and reputation of these
boats? Any special options or equipment to consider when comparing
different boats? Any other comprable EU boats I should consider?
Thanks for your response, Tom.

"· The fresh water system pump "spurts" more or less constantly making a
real mess… they replaced it with a slightly better variable speed pump that
seems to be working fine at this point… we’ll see."

You don't suppose the yard or the manufacturer are so stupid they don't
know what an expansion tank is used for in a fresh water pump system, do
you?

This is the stupidest thing of the whole post!

Does Brunswick/Bayliner own Hanse??

(Shhh...don't tell anyone at the dock. I cheated! Fed up with the ****
little 1 quart plastic expansion tank from "marine" dealers, I dropped by
my local hardware store plumbing department and bought a whole gallon
expansion tank with a REAL air inlet fitting on it I could pressurize when
it becomes waterlogged. Pump on....pump off...water pressure is so smooth
you'd think it was hooked to the dock!)

Wow, what a nightmare. I wonder if this was just a lemon or if they
are all plagued with such problems. What other similar boats should I
be considering? Thanks for the heads up.

I agree it's a nightmare, but to me, it seemed more like the yard did a
poor job of prep than anything else. I doubt all Hanse's have this sort
of problem or we'd surely have smelled the stink by now. Note nobody
posted to the story something like, "They all do that".

I think the lesson is that you need to inspect the boat VERY carefully
before accepting delivery. Stuff like the stanchions not being bolted
down - good grief!!

Good point. This is only story I have read where they had so much
trouble. The only place on the web where I could read comments about
this boat was at a owners group. Granted this group would be somewhat
biased but the overall response was no where near as negative. This
boat may have been a lemon or like you said it could have been more of
a yard issue than a manufacturer issue.
