Flying Flags -- Properly
It torgues my eyes and butt to see U.S. flags flying from bow rails,
spreaders and antennas. Or Q and courtesy flags flying from most anywhere except where they're supposed to be. Do people not know or do they deliberately defy propriety? I once saw a sailboat in Chesapeake Bay with a myriad of differemt flags flying from starboard and port spreaders, arranged by size from top to bottom, both halyards, from spreader to very near the deck. |

not only that it is the disrespect that many "boaters" show for other
country flags. Flags from other countries are not to be displayed as "trophies". Bahama flags really look good when they are flown from the outriggers on a "sports fish" :last time I was in the Bahamas I caught hell from the immigration officials for not flying a yellowjack "anchorlt" wrote in message om... Get a copy of Chapman's, ESPECIALLY if you're a new boater.

Second, ONE FLAG PER HOIST. If you don't have a sufficient number of flag halyards at the correct locations, don't fly that flag that day. Finally, it takes more than a little trouble sometimes to get it right, as anyone who has used a pigstick to put the burgee at the masthead will tell you. These days displaying the national ensign from a pole at the stern of the sailboat, both underway and at anchor, will do just fine. -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://kerrydeare.home.comcast.net/ |

ROTFLMAO ....................... My standing orders to the crew are "bear away" as boats like that are probably heading for the breakers or a reef. G But they look even prettier on their sides... R. How true !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! |

Interesting lexicography. A "jack" is a officially small flag
indicating a vessel's nationality as in Union Jack and the fixture it is displayed on known as a jack staff. It was corrupted to mean any small flag such as a courtesy or signal flag. The Q for quarantine being yellow became known as the "yellow jack". Because if its connotation to a disease, Yellow Jack is also another name for yellow fever.
