Just for Fun Question .. west coast to Panama Canal . through..

Looking at a boat book.. wondering about the boats that go from
S Calif all the way to the Panama Canal . and through.

How far is that? And does it cost lots of money to go through the canal?

Any of you world cruisers ever do this?

Tell all,, interested in learning.

It's a waste of time and money and puts one at the mercy of forces beyond
one's control. I prefer to sail around the Horn. I've done it several times
and in both directions although it's much easier going from west to east.

Around the Horn, several times and in both directions? One would think that
this accomplishment would be lauded in the annals of sailing. Do you feel
slighted to have been so widely and universally ignored?

You're new around here, Karin, so you can be forgiven for not being aware of
my sailing philosophy. I sail strictly for the sake of my own personal
sailing satisfaction. I do it right and I never fail at it. My voyages have
always been and remain quite trouble-free and routine. However, I feel it is
an uttermost waste of time and space to attempt to share my accomplishments
and acquired expertise with those who will never be able to understand any
of it, let alone emulate it. Therefore, my accomplishments remain
undocumented for the general public which continues to display little or no
ability to appreciate them in the first place.

Not so new, William. I've been participating in this forum off and on since
1995. The idea of your hiding your light under a bushel is amusing.

I did hear of a bloke who sailed round the Horn in an armchair. Would that
be Wilbur?

Actually he has made several circumnavigations. Several times he has
gotten turned around in the bath and had to navigate himself back. a
proper sailor he is.

about $1,500 all told for any boat you are likely to sail. From a cost
view, it's much less than doing the Horn and much safer / faster.

I know many folks who've done it. The sail there from either side is
pleasant and interesting.

You haven't specified if you are single handing. I'd not try the Canal
single handed esp as a new seaman. As to the Horn, the W to E transit is
at least possible for a new sailor, but again, single handing? Aside
from trying stuff like the NW passage, I can't think of a tougher thing
than the Horn.
