Just a piece of straight, straight-grained wood that seems to bend in a nice way. I guess some old books on lofting would tell you all that you ever need to know about those. Enjoy! Heikki |

A thin batten and a set of lofting ducks is what he needs. Holds a fair
curve without damaging the material. -- Glenn Ashmore I'm building a 45' cutter in strip/composite. Look into "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction" page 118 (of the 2nd edition) or so. They show a simple method of transferring curves layed out using flexible wooden battens. You should be able to find the book at www.westsytem.com |

Bernie,
I own those flexible blue strips that another fellow posted. They're not much good for transfering long curves, because unlike a flexible batten, they don't follow smooth curves. The curves usually end up with bumps in them. They're more useful for complex curves that would be hell to transcribe otherwise. In "Yacht Designing and Planning", Howard Chapelle devotes an entire section to drawing techniques and tools. If I remember correctly, he uses bought forms for irregular curves and wood battens for regular ones. His battens thin out towards the ends so that you get a fair curve. It's worth picking up from the library. I gotta admit, though, that after reading it I decided drawing wasn't for me. -m Bernie Cook wrote: Hello group , I have a friend of mine that does a lot of boat repair and canvas work on them as well .He is getting into boat building as well and he is looking for a type of adjustable curve or batten for laying out long curves and being able to put on the wood to transfer it .I have read of these items but have no found what we are looking for .Any help on where to look would be appreciated . I have one of the first type (blue plastic bendable) and don't really find
it that useful. I certainly wouldn't trust it to hold a curve while transferring it from lofting to wood. (too flexible) For the same reason, I don't trust it to generate a really fair curve; smooth, yes, but fair, no. Rip out some wooden battens, and note that since you don't insist on a constant radius of curvature, the width can be thinner where the curve is more severe.
