Plywood Density
Anyone can give a quick answer to Plywood Density? Or just average weight
per square foot of .5 in Plywood. It seems my calculation to by boat weight is wrong. Thanks in advance |
Plywood Density
Here's an answer . . but you will have to apply some math & logic.
You didn't say what thickness, so perhaps you are looking for a 'Universal Constant'. Because it is inherently a natural product, I don't believe there is one. However here is something that can be used in the same vein. A 4x8 sheet of 1/4 inch ply weighs 'about' 25 pounds. This seems to be a fairly constant 'multiplier' - i.e. a 1/2 in thick sheet weighs about 50 pounds, and a 3/4 inch about 75 pounds. Do some simple calculations and you get the weight per square foot, or even down to per square INCH, if you need it. This could be used to approximate the additional mass of your scantlings} "mscres" wrote in message ... Anyone can give a quick answer to Plywood Density? Plywood Density
Depends on the type of wood. Okoume is about 30 lb/cf Meranti is 37 lb/cf.
US marine fir plywood is about 35 lb/cf. In general softwood plywoods weigh about 5% more than the wood it is made from. Heavier hardwood plywood is around 2% heavier. -- Glenn Ashmore I'm building a 45' cutter in strip/composite. And take into account that plywood isn't exactly the nominal measurement.

Thanks in advance If you are using locally supplied material all you have to do is take the bathroom scales down to the lumberyeard and stand a sheet on the scales on edge. That's what I did when I was desiging the cheap plywood boats on my website ( www.ncf.ca/~ag384/Boats.htm ). There's some data and formulae there on bending raduii. I discovered lauan underlayment weighs the same as 5.22mm okume marine. |
Plywood Density
Then: 25/32*4*12 = 37.5 lbs per cubic foot.

Thanks again,
I will use the 37lb/cf "Glenn Ashmore" wrote in message ... Depends on the type of wood. Okoume is about 30 lb/cf Meranti is 37 lb/cf. US marine fir plywood is about 35 lb/cf.
