where to buy stainless steering chain?

I don't know what to ask or search for. It's part of the steering
system which is a wheel/pedistal/cable arrangement. It has to be
stainless because it's a traditional boat with a compass on top of the
post. The original chain is a beautiful, precision made s.s. from
Germany but it's the wrong size. I got a steel replacement that says
"40" on it. I guess that's the pitch but now the compass doesn't work.
Any ideas what to ask for or where to look? Thanks.

You could try degaussing it, just for laughs?

The result might hold up longer than you expected.

I concur. You might find that with any of the motorcycle chain lube
products that the steel chain will last a LONG time. I use a #50 in a
car wash application where it is always wet and the stainless chain
wears faster than the steel rusts away as long as we recoat it every
month or so. (the soap washes the chain lube away). We have tried many
products but most of the high end chain lubes meant for motorcycles work
the best.

Stainless with lube lasts 6-8 months, steel lasts a bit more than a year.
