Amatu Need Advice for first time Project
 

Hello all,

As a first time novice to fixing boats I have probably jumped into the deap
end but I like a challenge.

Just aquired a 17ft - 1/2 cabin Fishing boat / Cabin Cruiser (not really
sure of the exact term to use)

Wooden frame, Ply hull with Fibreglass coating. All looks good yet there are
a few of the ribs have to be replaced and also some sections of the ? rails
? (small strips on inside of hull running lengthwise) need to be replaced
as there is some dry / wet rot. The Boat had a few years of bad neglect yet
I ave taken it on as a project....

Most of the frame is quite solid... none of the fibreglass is cracked or
repaired in any areas... and the internal ply hull and keel (centre beem)
seem OK... no breakdown as far as I see...

Just want a few peoples opinions on what marerials I should use, wood type,
glue type, techniques, etc.... what should be done first?....

At this stage the boat is bare... no cabin (taken off), no decking (only bow
cover frame) and the intact hull....

I am partial to all epoxy resin for repairs. Polyester doesn't stick
well to polyester. Grind down to the glass and replace the part with
decent exterior or marine ply. I like to use biaxial tape because all
the fibers work unlike with woven tape. It is stronger and also easier
to use.
I also use the epoxy as glue, just mix it with woodflour.

I have some play in the rudder of my 31 foot 1971 Seafarer sloop. I
think it is a Tripp design, full keel. What I'm hoping to find out from
someone in the group is - How is this rudder connected to the stainless
shaft which connects to the tiller? Through-bolts in the shaft which are
imbedded in the fiberglass?? or welded straps?? If so, how many and
where? Has this happened to any one else?
Any ideas for a fix?? Should I even worry about a little play in this
connection?
The rudder on this boat is mounted on a triangular fin which is
just aft of the prop which shaft comes out of a little shelf in the
back of the keel (if you can visualize that)

Are you saying that the rudder is loose on the shaft or is the play
elsewhere?
