Hi all,

I got a demand to finish a model with polyester.
To have a better idea about the finish here is link of a picture of a
chair with the required finish:

the only thing I know is that this is an ordinary wood chair covered

glass reinforced polyester with silk screen flower pattern...

I've little or no experience with polyester finishing, so I'm looking
for some place to start, book, web or other basic info that might get
me on track.

1. I can't think of any reason to use fiberglass with polyester resin on
a chair. It would be as effective - and world's easier - to paint then
do the silk screening.

2. Polyester resin is a two part material - resin + catalyst. The ratio
one to another determines how fast the resin sets up. It is thick...for
something like a chair it would be next to impossible to brush on. It
would also be next to impossible to apply fiberglass. It can be sprayed
but I've never done so...thinner is styrene.

3. There are two kinds of polyester resin...laminating and finishing.
The laminating resin stays tacky so additional coats bond well. The
finishing resin has wax in it to prevent air from reaching the surface
which allows it to set up hard and non-sticky.

5. I can't stress enough how difficult it would be to apply fiberglass
and polyester resin to completely cover a chair; especially one with
spindles. Even if you get it on, you would be faced with 10s - maybe
100s - of hours of sanding and smoothing. It is a very bad idea.
