I ordered 25 yards of 3" glass tape, cost $18.84, weighing a few ounces
....
I just received it with a S&H charge of $11.18...
I expected it to come to Michigan by US Postoffice for a couple of
bucks postage...

Apparently this Emptor did not Caveat enough... jeez... Expensive
lesson...

I'm also generally surprised at Jamestown's shipping charges. I still buy
from them, because their selection is very good, but i don't delude myself
that the total cost of an order will be competitive.

I found out my local lumber yard orders from them. I have been able to
get them to order for me and I still pay the catalog price but w/o shipping.

My favorite shipping to date was with Sears. Needed a gasket for the
compressor, $2.89 + $15 shipping.

I really like the "click to check shipping costs" feature offered on some
web sites (Amazon.com comes to mind). Whenever I order online I make it a
point to see if there are any 'minimum order' fees, 'handling' fees, etc.
Yes, some folks 'slip in' extra charges. Some still use the 'dollar amount'
to calculate a flat shipping fee (J. C. Whitney comes to mind).

Then there is UPS who sends out a second invoice. "This is not a bill,
the money has already been charged to your credit card." I sent out 4
boxes for a total of $135. Several days later I got an invoice for an
additional $25 with no explanation of the charges.
