mounting a seawater strainer?

I,m not sure just what arangement you have, but here are some rules you
should follow if at all possible. Try to mount the strainer in such a way
that it is higher than sea level to facillitate cap removal without
flooding. This should include the hose exit to the cooling pump as well.
Choose a strainer that allows a straight stot with a wire from the cap
opening through the thru-hull fitting for ease of cleaning. Lastly make
certain there is a riser after the cooling water pump before entering the
engine. This will wet the rubber impeller and prevent the impeller burning
up if it should suck air.

the water pump on a Yanmar single cylinder diesel. It's a Vetus (?)
heavy plastic basket strainer you can clean out by removing a wing nut
on top to access the basket.
The sea cock and pump inlet are basically at the same level so do you
loop one side or the other of the stainer up a certain height or make
everything as level as possible? Also, the hoses are a black, very
flexible rubber affair with rings every inch or so and are corrugated
inside which seems like it would trap sediment. It looks expensive and
maybe a bit too long so one of them would lie on the floor of the hull
with a horizontal loop in one spot. Should I replace it with something
