Building a Trailer
 

I have a Veneitan rowing boat, a sandolo. It is 19 feet long, 3 feet 9
inches beam and weighs around 300 pounds. I keep it in a boathouse and
roll it in the water on a Sietech dolly. Once in a while I would like
to trialer the boat. I have checked out trailers and those available
are not suitable. Does anybody have a source on how to build a trailer?

I can't tell you how to build it based on what you asked but I can give you
some things to think about that normal boat trailer builder's ( let's
qualify normal to factory made runabout powerboats) may not think about that
may or may not effect your boat. Since it is only 300# one might assume
that is it lightly built. The "normal" trailer would actually use the boats
own stringer system to stiffen things up. Your boat may not have that
strength being so light. So you will have to give some consideration to
having a trailer that is stiff enough without any help from the boat. Also,
again assuming that your boat is not particularly strong ( being 300#, 19'
lg and designed to row in calm water) it may be somewhat delicate and would
need some type of cradle to support it over most of it's length. Anyway,
these are the things I would think about if it were me.

Try 'Stevenson Projects' { www.stevproj.com } in Carmel, CA. They are the
designers of the 'Weekender' and a LOT of other boats.

For $20 you can get a set of plans to build a wooden trailer. While it has
the 'problem' of floating, with a 300 pound boat {or a couple of handy
cinder blocks}it shouldn't be an issue.

The photo of it in use shows their 14 foot 'Pocket Cruiser' aboard - it is
as long as the trailer. HOWEVER, my 19-foot & 1200 pound West Wight Potter
rides on her steel trailer with the last 5-feet or so extending beyond the
end of the trailer. It is designed that way, with the aft bunks/supports.

'Adapting' a wood-framed trailer is a lot easier, and less expensive, than
cutting & welding steel.

Just as a by-the-by, I used an 8-foot, flat bed, 'utility trailer' to carry
a 15-foot Dory a couple of hundred miles. The only 'problem' was all the
'bouncing' because the load was so light !!

What kind of wheels, axel and suspension are you using? What kind of
tools and building skills do you have to work with? Why were the used
trailers in your area unsuitable?
